Mission Possible is an 8-week weight loss program designed to help you achieve a PERSONAL weight loss goal that you set for yourself!

Weight loss goal must be at least 5 lbs and no greater than 16 lbs  (a two-pound weight loss per week is  considered healthy).

In addition to our current exercises classes, you will have the opportunity to attend up to four additional 30-minute classes each week. Those class times are as follows:

• Mondays @ 5:30pm
• Wednesdays @ 5:30 pm
• Tuesdays @ 10:00 am
• Thursdays @ 10:00 am

Every Thursday evening you will have the  opportunity to have a sit down healthy meal or a nutrition talk from a certified nutritionist!

The Y will help you keep a food and exercise log to monitor your progress.

Once you reach your goal you will receive a t-shirt that says: “Mission Accomplished!”

The “Karen Cronin Volunteer of the Year Award” was presented at a Volunteer Appreciation Dinner on Saturday at The Meadowbrook Center.

In 2011, Mike volunteered in the following ways:

• He dealt blackjack at MVCF’s ShawsVegas Casino Night fundraiser;
• He hosted the Butterflies & Bruschetta dinner for sponsors of the EastMont Tomato Festival;
• He volunteered at Ladies Night Out;
• He grew butterfly bushes that were donated to MVCF for various events;
• And he worked countless hours on landscaping projects at The Meadowbrook Center — namely on a library garden dedicated to Karen Cronin’s memory.

The work of more than 40 Montgomery County artists, craftspeople and businesses is now on display at the Holiday Market at Meadowbrook, located in the Waldron Family YMCA in Shawsville.

Featured gifts include: Oakland Cottage silk scarves; local authors including Tom Angleberger’s “Origami Yoda” series; hand-painted Virginia Tech ornaments; quilts; fine jewelry; Wood Creations; New River Gourmet gift baskets; and much more.

The Holiday Market is open during regular Waldron Family Y hours: Monday-Thursday, 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Friday, 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Saturday, 7 a.m. to 1 p.m.; and Sunday, 1 to 5 p.m.

Many of the featured artists will be at the Market for the Holiday Open House at Meadowbrook on Dec. 3 from 10 am to 2 pm.

Featured events include a pancake breakfast with Santa at 10 a.m.; Tom Angleberger signing copies of his books at 11 a.m.; and an afternoon performance of the Eastern Montgomery Elementary School choir.

The beauty of the Holiday Market at Meadowbrook is that you don’t have to staff your tables and sell your work … we do it for you during the six weeks of the holiday season! You simply rent space at the market (ranging from $10 to $25 for the season) and then pay us just 10 percent of your sales as commission.

In return, we promote the market through our various social and print media and host a Holiday Open House on Dec. 3 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Located at The Meadowbrook Center in the Waldron Family Y and George Gray Gallery, the Holiday Market in its inaugural year in 2010 generated more than $10,000 in sales for local artists and craftspeople. This year, we intend the Market to be even more successful.

A few new wrinkles:

• To thwart the traditional tournament powerhouses, we offer chances to “sabotage” other teams.
• And to thwart the sabotagers, teams can buy “insurance” to salvage their score.
• The tournament will also offer a closest-to-the-hole prize and a most holes-in-one prize (the holes are 3 feet wide, after all).

Sign up for the 6-week class on either the Tuesday session or Thursday session that runs Nov. 1-Dec. 16, from 5:45 to 6:45 p.m.

Rate: $25/Y member, $35/non-member. Add $15 for each additional family member.

In this 6-week introduction, you’ll explore the martial arts for the first time or train again if you have already had some martial arts training. Class will be based on the traditional Korean styles of Tae Kwon Do and Hap Ki Do and will include techniques from other martial arts styles as well.

During this session you will learn some of Tae Kwon Do’s blocks, strikes and kicks and well as some self-defense techniques that are unique to Hap Ki Do.

In order to fully enjoy the martial arts training and to properly perform many of the techniques, fitness training like stretching and strength related exercises will also be so part of each class. Additional training will include improving balance, self confidence and discipline. You can use these skills everyday and for the rest of your life. Classes will be open to all ages and skill levels.

Please wear loose fitting clothing for the classes.

Instructor Darnell Rutherford is a 1st degree Black Belt who has more than 25 years of martial arts experience. Mr. Rutherford has studied several styles of martial arts over the years and but always returns to his base art of Tae Kwon Do. Mr. Rutherford first studied judo while in High School and began training in Tae Kwon Do and Hap Ki Do while in college. Over the years Mr Rutherford has trained in several different styles of martial arts during his travels around the world.
