Mountain Valley wins $75,000 grant from AEP Foundation

American Electric Power Foundation has awarded a $75,000 grant toward Mountain Valley Charitable Foundation’s campaign to transform the old Elliston Fire Station into a food pantry to serve eastern Montgomery County, Virginia.

“We are honored and humbled by this award,” says Michael Hemphill, executive director of Mountain Valley Charitable Foundation (MVCF). “While we of course believe in the value of this project, it is very gratifying that a foundation of AEP’s prestige has validated our vision.”

With the AEP Foundation grant, MVCF has raised $214,000 to date toward the $230,000 renovation.

Click here to download a pledge and gift form.

MVCF is revitalizing the old Elliston Fire Station, a culturally historic structure originally built in the 1950s by the founding members of the community’s volunteer fire department.

The renovation will feature a thrift shop and provide the area’s food pantry – which feeds more than 150 low-income families each month – a permanent home. The food pantry’s current location, the old Shawsville Middle School, is scheduled to be demolished in 2013.

AEP Foundation focuses on improving lives through education; protecting the environment; providing basic human services in the areas of hunger, housing, health and safety; and enriching the quality of life in communities it serves through art, music and cultural heritage.

Earlier this month, MVCF won a $3,000 grant from actor Kevin Bacon after collecting the second most number of donors in the nationwide “6 Days of Good for Hunger” challenge sponsored by Bacon’s SixDegrees.org. More than 100 donors from throughout the country contributed $5,330 to MVCF’s cause.

The renovation is scheduled to be completed in December. Funds are needed to repay the loan we’ve taken out to ensure the renovation is completed before the food pantry’s current location is torn down.
