Remembering M.L. “Pug” Wells

It is with great sadness to announce the death of our long-time fire chief, committed community volunteer and friend Malvin L. “Pug” Wells, who passed away this morning.

Here is the news release from Montgomery County.

Pug was the last active charter member of the Elliston Volunteer Fire Department.

For 48 years he served as chief of the department.  At 79 years old, he stepped down as chief in January but still answered emergency calls.

His legacy in eastern Montgomery County was featured just last month in a wonderful remembrance in The Roanoke Times. But his volunteer service extended throughout Montgomery County and beyond.

  • Montgomery County Planning Commission, former chairman
  • Montgomery County Fire & Rescue Association
  • Montgomery-Blacksburg Local Emergency Planning Committee
  • Montgomery County Transportation Safety Commission
  • Montgomery County Towing Advisory Commission
  • New River Valley Water Rescue and Recovery Committee
  • Virginia Fire Service Council
  • Montgomery County Fire & Rescue Advisory Board

In 2007, Pug received the Cupp/Teel Rotary Club of Blacksburg’s Citizen of the Year (click here for article).

Closer to his Lafayette home, Pug served on the Lafayette United Methodist Church administrative board, Village of Elliston civic organization, and lent his strong voice to The Redeemers Gospel Quartet.

As much as his physical presence will be missed in our community, it is his inner character — always calm, always assured, always dignified — that will be most irreplaceable.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Mary Lee, his wife of 62 years; his four children and extended family; the volunteer firefighters with whom he served for 58 years; and all whose lives were touched by this special man.

Vote all things “EastMont” in Roanoke Times’ Best of the NRV poll

Those who live here already know that eastern Montgomery County is the best place to live in the New River Valley.

Let’s make sure the New River Valley knows it, too.

The Roanoke Times‘ 7th annual “Best of the New River Valley” survey is now underway through March 11.
