Mountain Valley Charitable Foundation seeks applicants for scholarships, grants

Mountain Valley Charitable Foundation is offering $6,000 in scholarships and grants to eastern Montgomery County high school students and educational programs.$3,000 in scholarships is available from the Foundation’s G.W. and Dot King Scholarship Fund.

Applicants must be Eastern Montgomery High School seniors who demonstrate:
  • Commitment to community service;
  • Clear desire to continue educational journey;
  • Range of high school activities and/or work experience;
  • And a need for financial assistance.

Another $3,000 comes from the Foundation’s Loraine Ryan Education Fund. It is available to eastern Montgomery County schools and nonprofit organizations for educational programs, projects or equipment that benefit school-age children. For instance, in 2010, the Fund awarded nearly $4,000 to Shawsville Middle School for high-tech Smart Boards.

Mountain Valley Charitable Foundation builds better community in eastern Montgomery County by investing in its people and resources. The Foundation coordinated the $2.5 million redevelopment of The Meadowbrook Center, helped create Shawsville Farmers Market and EastMont Arts Association, and built the Meadowbrook Market where local artists and farmers display and sell their crafts and produce.

Free bike helmets at Waldron Y Healthy Kids Day on April 9

Learn some fun, free — and most importantly, healthy — tips for your kids on Saturday, April 9, at the Waldron Family YMCA.

For its annual Healthy Kids Day, the Y will give away children’s bike helmets as part of a Bike Rodeo. The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office will conduct car seat safety checks. Kids can also enjoy healthy snacks, face-painting and balloons, fun fitness classes, and games such as Wii Sports.

Healthy Kids Day will run from 9:30 a.m. to 12 noon. Located at The Meadowbrook Center in Shawsville, the Waldron Y can be reached at 268.1623 or www.vtymca.org/waldron.
