“N.E.W. Family” at the Waldron Family Y

The Waldron Family Y is seeking families at risk of obesity-related illnesses to participate in a one-of-a-kind wellness program.

Throughout 2011, the Y will reach 48 families through an 8-week program called “The N.E.W. Family (Nutrition, Exercise and Wellness).”

Funded in part by a $37,236 grant from the Virginia Foundation for Healthy Youth, the N.E.W. Family will provide:

  • A proven weight-loss program for adults and their children;
  • Nutritional and cooking classes at The Meadowbrook Center that will teach families to prepare easy-to-cook, low-cost, and healthy meals;
  • A community garden experience for families to learn gardening and farm-to-table techniques.

The next session begins May 9.

To participate in the N.E.W. Family, the non-member individual rate is $72; household rate is $106 (includes two months use of Y). The Y member individual rate is $20; household rate is $40. To enjoy the 8 N.E.W. Family weekly dinners is just an additional $24/person.

Financial assistance — available through the Virginia Foundation for Healthy Youth grant — can make the program free for qualifying families.
